Gorgeous, Big, Well Priced LaptopThis is my second Toshiba laptop. Number one is around 4 years old and still works well.This review is more about the A355 chassis, than this exact speclaptop, and should apply to just about every one of the laptops in thisseries whether they run AMD or Intel chips. The first view is that the materials are just plain flat outgorgeous. From the shiny exterior, to the semi rounded base, the twolarge chrome mouse buttons, the nicely integrated Harmon Kardonspeakers, the illuminated touch areas, the big beautiful monitor, andthose shiny keys. Yes this is one very pretty computer. Under that pretty hood are some interesting specs. It used to beincredibly rare to see an eSATA port on any computer, let alone alaptop. Well this one has exactly that - an eSATA port that doubles asa USB port. Nice option to hook up external hard drives. It alsoincludes an iLink, Firewire, or IEEE-1394 port - an incredible rarity(even Apple dropped this port). The audio ports and volume control areon the front, nicely placed. There's absolutely no ports on the rear.There's also an express card slot (not a PCMCIA slot, but EXPRESS cardslot) and a multi flash memory card reader (they've dropped CF from thelist). It does not include Bluetooth - a very strange omission sinceevery single bluetooth adapter uses the Toshiba stack to run. Useeither of these adapters, they work perfectly: IOGear GBU421 Bluetooth2.0 USB Micro Adapter or Cirago BTA3210 Class 2 Micro Bluetooth Adapter(Black Tip) - both are outstanding miniscule adapters. Toshiba stuffed 4Gb of RAM and a 320Gb hard drive into this bigbaby. Those are some pretty nice features in a laptop this inexpensive.Those Harmon Kardon speakers sound very nice. You'll either hate this or love it, and fortunately you can turnthis off if you hate it. The Toshiba name, a little band above thescratchy navigation pad, and the media buttons all light up white(pretty bright at that). I think it looks pretty cool, but others havehated all those lights. The monitor, oh that monitor is gorgeous. Movies pop, they lookabsolutely fantastic on this computer. It's a nice big screen. Yes itis a gloss finish and you do get some reflections here or there, butgenerally it's not bad. The keys are all glossy and the fanatical among you might not likeall the visible fingerprints, but I think most will get over thatquickly. There is just a ton of room to put your hands to type and usethe computer. That surface in front is sweet for a palm rest. Function-wise, this computer is a decent performer. Nobody isbuying this to run heavy games or render video - it won't do thosethings. But for the occasional game, the occasional video edit, you'llscore well here. Do note, this computer runs Windows Vista Premium 64-Bit. Pleasedon't be afraid of that operating system. I'm running 64 bit on twocomputers and it runs just beautifully. There is almost no new hardwarethat won't run under 64 bit these days. It's a rock solid platform. Andthat OS allows all 4Gb of memory to be seen and used (32 bit tops outat 3Gb). And if you don't believe me, type this into google - pcmag 64bit computing. Read the first article in that hit list.This is no lightweight computer. It's a big, pretty heavy laptop.Great for around the house. Not something you would travel everywherewith. But it is portable. Heat generation is nothing extreme. It doespull air in from below, so be careful about couches or beds pluggingthose holes. It's a good solid fast computer. There's a bit of fan noise,nothing huge, but you will know the machine is running. I hate tocomment on battery life, that's so dependent on how bright you make thescreen, processor speed settings and the like. I got a good solid 2hours of hitting it very hard at max everything. You could probably geta good 3 hours, maybe 4 at more conservative settings. Something to keep in mind, Toshiba ships all their laptops full ofbloat-ware. It's a really good idea to remove it all. Almost none of itis necessary. There are two websites that will clear all that garbageout of your computer. It's explained in a great article at PCMag. Typethis into google, PCMag make the most out of your new pc. The first hitwill be a fantatstic article on how to remove the garbage. Overall, this is a big, beautiful, good sounding, heavy, hard working, well priced laptop. June 2009 Update - well my son managed to crack the screen. He hasno idea how this happened, but it's certainly not Toshiba's fault. Iwill admit the top is somewhat flexible, but that's not how this broke.He probably fell asleep and rolled over on top of it and doesn'tremember that. I am super happy I bought the 3 year no fault warranty.Just a word to the wise, displays in general have gotten more fragile.Use care or buy a warranty (just be sure it's backed by the right kindof company). A Fast Laptop for Work + Excellent Video and Audio QualityThis Toshiba Satellite replaced a four-year-old Dell Inspiron. As awriter, I use my laptop every day and wanted a comfortable keyboard andtouchpad. This Satellite delivers with a sturdy keyboard, enough spaceto rest your palms comfortably while typing and a textured touchpad. The touchpad has touch scrolling on both the right side andbottom (handy for scrolling along large spreadsheets), so you don'thave to hold down the left-click button to scroll--much easier on thehand. The touchpad scrolling settings are adjustable and can beremoved. The click buttons are large and placed so that your palms don't brush them while you type. I also wanted a laptop with excellent video quality for watchingDVDs and Play Now features from NetFlix. Videos are crisp and colorfulon this 16-inch screen and it's easy to see from several angles (unlikemy old LCD-screen where the screen had to be tilted just exactly rightto avoid the black shadow effect). If you like to watch movies in bed on the computer with yourhoney, this computer is great for that since both people can see thescreen without black shadowing. The light-up DVD controls on the top ofthe keyboard are also a great feature for watching DVD's in bed.The speakers are very good quality, with excellent range and canbe turned up loud enough to enjoy music or watch a movie from anotherpart of the room. My most favorite feature of this computer is the volume control.Located on the front, next to the 5:1 memory card reader and headphonejack, is a small wheel that turns left and right, like the volumecontrol on a radio. It's so simple, it's brilliant! When you have music blasting andthe phone rings with a call from a client, a quick flip of the dial andthe sound is turned down or off. No more hunting on the keyboard forthe Function Key + a picture of a muted speaker.The Satellite has a built-in webcam that is easily activated witha click. The webcam controls appear whenever your mouse hovers near theleft side of the screen. Speaking of hovering controls, whenever you press the FN(Function) key, a large legend appears at the top of the screen withfunction controls, which is handy when you don't have your glasses.All four USB ports are on the sides near the front, as is thenetwork port. It is easier to plug and unplug components, but it's alsoeasier to bump my USB drive when picking up something from my desk. Did I mention that this computer is blazingly fast? Wow! Need tohave five different programs running plus several web pages open? Not aproblem for this zippy laptop.I've been very happy with the Toshiba Satellite and would highly recommend it. Very HappyI spent way tooooo long researching and reading and thinking aboutwhich laptop to buy and then bought the Toshiba. I'm sure other choiceswould have worked for me as well, but I'm VERY happy with the Toshiba. It looks good, which, while not a big factor, is a nice bonus. It'sfast. I've used a number of other PC's running Vista and they've allbeen pretty slow, so I think the 4GB of memory is a big help. Thislaptop has built-in DVD control buttons in the housing above thekeyboard and while I wouldn't have bought it because of this feature,it turns out to be REALLY easy to use and helpful!I've been surprised at how much I like it! I've used products fromDell, HP, Compaq, IBM, Lenovo, Apple and Sony and this Toshiba is, sofar, better for me than anything I've used before.

love itI did some price compares and for the price, you won't find another laptop in this class. I work in the industry and am a power user by any definition. Thisis noticeably faster than any PC I've ever used and is comparable tosome of the low-end servers I work with. I was a little nervous about the graphics card -- nVidia being mypreference -- but the graphics are fast and stunning. Vista sitsquietly on this machine, rarely taking up more than 1 or 2% of the cpuat idle. I've had mine for about a week. I'm upgrading from a Toshiba with aheat sync issue that is constantly running too hot. Because of theheavy graphics card and cpu, I was really nervous about heatdissipation on this laptop, but so far, it runs very cool most of thetime. Heavy graphics will cause the thing to heat up a little to thetouch, but even without a laptop cooler, it's still manageable. Withone, it cools down to nothing. Pros:-- it's fast. Even something as simple as loading a web page overwifi is visibly faster than my old Toshiba dual core. Everything fromthe wifi "N" card to the 6 gb ram, really kicks in. -- price. Comparable laptops will cost you over $2000 andprobably closer to $3000. As someone pointed out, the Alienware versionis something like $5K. For the price, there isn't much this one doesn'thave. -- design: the ebony-black look is smooth. The keyboard is firm and decent. -- video: rocks. I run 1600x900 in 32-bit color and the graphics are fast and clean.--weight: hey.. it's a 17 inch monster laptop. But for it's size, it's still under 8 lbs. It's very "carry-able". -- drive bays: this model comes with a built in 500GB drive and an open drive bay. I can't wait to fill that :D-- nice features: Not sure I'll ever use the remote control (what'sthe point of a remote on a laptop?) but the touch sensitive volumecontrol, the built in web cam, the "disable" button on the glide pad --all really nice additions. Cons: (there aren't many, but)-- USB ports: it has every port you can dream of from HDMI to amodem. But it only has 2 USB. I'd gladly sacrifice the modem for 2 moreUSB. The laptop does have blue tooth, though, which offsets this a bit.-- 5400rpm drive: if it had a 7200rpm, it'd be a near-perfect PC. I will say that I haven't noticed a slowness yet, though. -- full keyboard: the keyboard has a keypad, which is great! onlythe keypad puts the rest of the keyboard a bit off-center. I've had itfor a week, and I'm just now getting used to it. Not a huge deal, butannoying at first to get used to off-center typing. Ijumped on it and VERY glad I did.This has everything I need..an Intel Centrino 2 quad processor(love the speed!), 6 Gigs of RAM, 500 Gig hard drive, 17.3" High Defwide screen, web cam with microphone, terrific Direct X9 and Direct X10capable graphics card (not as good as Nvidia but in this price range,I'm very satisfied with it..Sims 3 rocks on this thing!!), dual layerDVD drive, and everything else listed in the description of it above,including a snazzy little remote control (that I'll no doubtlose..lol). I still haven't figured out the TV part of it yet, but thenagain, I've only just got it today..lol.The style is awesome, I really love the retro type look of it. Thekeyboard is very comfortable to type on, much more so than my old Dell.And this one doesn't run as hot as my Dell. I have it on my lap rightnow with no problems at all. My Dell would be cooking my thighs rightabout now..lol.There are a few minor drawbacks that I'll point out. In comparisonto my old Dell, this HP dv7 has a much noisier DVD drive. My old Dellis whisper quiet, can't even hear the drive running when loading. The speakers in this dv7 don't even come close to the awesome soundmy Dell has, even though it, too, has a bass/sub woofer. The sound isvery good in the dv7, just not top-of-the-line great like what you getin the massively expensive laptops. The monitor on this dv7, even though HD, also doesn't compare. Thisone has a high gloss finish with a tad faded color, whereas my Dellhigh res has a matte finish and deep rich colors. The dv7 monitor islisted as 'Generic' in the system info so that's probably why it lackssome quality. Don't get me wrong, it's still very good, just not asgood as my three thousand dollar old Dell.My Dell is also built like a Sherman tank, weighing in at over 8lbs and the entire body of it is composed mostly of metal. 5 yrs ofVERY rough handling and plenty of drops never fazed it one bit. Thisdv7, like with most newer laptops, is mostly plastic. It would nevermake it through the rough times my Dell survived unscathed. So, eventhough it's built pretty sturdy, extra care on my part is in order withthis one. I do like the lighter weight of this, too.The material this dv7 is made out of is also very fingerprintprone, although a special cleaning cloth is included in the box to takecare of that problem. Just don't lose the cloth..lol.Overall I'm very satisfied because of the price and everything Igot included in the price. To get a Dell Alienware with a quad and allthe bells and whistles would've cost me over $5,000. I just can'tafford that right now, so this HP dv7 is THE best option for mecompared to everything else out there I looked at. My husband loved my new dv7 SO much he also bought one for himself. It blows his old Toshiba out of the water.I just love the style of this one, too. I'm a big retro fan, andthis one is so retro-cool..lol. It's a very 'dressy' laptop, no doubt:) Black-tie as opposed to pinstripe suit cool. My Dell is so uglycompared to this one.All in all, this one will provide you with all of your gaming andentertainment needs in one awesomely attractive package with anawesomely slashed price!!!Best value for the price
I have had this product for four weeks. I bought it for business use with some moderate graphic editing applications.

Pros: It's plenty fast, and will be useful long after the software
finally catches up to it's capabilities. I expect this laptop to be
adequate for the next five years.

There's not really much to dislike about this item. It's fast, the
17" screen is nice, the four USB ports are more than enough, the 3 hour
battery life (on the power saver setting) has already came in handy on
more than one occasion, the number pad, the built in scroller into the
touchpad, the HDMI output, etc. all make for a very good user
experience.

The bad: No dealbreakers, but there are a few things that could have been better.

The battery gets quite warm. I have to position my chill pad off
center so the fan blows right on the battery, which is a little
awkward.

The 1600 * 900 resolution leaves a little to be desired. I
generally run a 24" LCD concurrently, so it isn't a big issue, but when
I am without the extra monitor, a resolution of 1680 * 1050 would be
much more convenient. Also, with most laptops, the viewing angles
aren't the greatest.

The sound of the onboard speakers is very mediocre. For a machine
built largely in part to service the gaming market, I thought this
would be better.

The delete key is tiny. I know this is normal, but it means that I have to learn to type better.

The touch controls for the volume and mute are often slow to respond.

When I plug a HDMI cable in for my external monitor, it often
changes the default sound to the speakers on the monitor. I have to
manually go into the sound control of the control panel to change it
back, even after I have unplugged the HDMI cable.

All in all, this is an amazing machine, being the first reasonably priced laptop with a Core2Quad processor. Despite it's glitches, I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a laptop in this price range.

So Glad to Have ThisI have this laptop for 2 weeks already and I am really glad becausethis helps me in my work and study. This laptop look simple but the wayit functions is really fast. One of my students dropped this laptopfrom my desk but lo and behold nothing happened. I had it checked justto make sure but everything is perfect! Amazing! So durability wise itsso good. Its fast with the internet. Picks up wi-fi so fast. The webcamis ok too. The picture resolution when I play dvd or from online isvery clear. The design is just right. All in all I don't have any problem with this. Watch Out for Power PlugToshiba laptops have a big time power plug issue (internal powerjack pulls away from housing preventing plug insertion). Wow. Better in most ways than previous modelsApple's latest version of the MacBook Pro combines a sleeker case,more GB of RAM, an SD slot, and longer battery life, all with a loweredprice. The LED backlit display (available on the previous models aswell) is simply gorgeous, with crisp graphics and easy-on-the-eyesclarity.Unlike older models of the MacBook and MacBook Pro, this laptopruns fairly cool, even after hours of using a lot of processor power.The case, though not as thin as the Air, is slimmer than most(non-Apple) laptops I've seen, with an aluminum case that resistsfingerprints better than the old MacBooks. The keyboard is comfortable,with responsive keys, and is lit from behind with blue light. The touchpad is a single square, without a visibly separate clicker, althoughit's there, at the bottom, under the pad, with right and left clickfunctions; navigation using the touch pad and clicker is extremelyeasy, but most heavy users will want to purchase a separate mouse, asthey would with any laptop.The 4 GM RAM is twice what the lower end of the Pros offeredpreviously. The battery life is now at seven hours. Naturally, theactual time depends on what you are doing, but the estimate comespretty close. The SD slot is a nice touch. The GEForce NVIDIAintegrated graphics has been in the Pros for at least a generation,with generally good reviews, although this newer entry-level Pro nolonger has the dedicated graphics chip. If you want the best Macgraphics, you'll have to purchase one of the more expensive Pros thatinclude the integrated graphics and the NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT chip.For most people, however, this version is enough. The MacBook Pro comes bundled with the newest iLife Suite, afantastic set of programs that keep getting better: iPhoto, iMovie,Garage Band, PhotoBooth, iDVD, etc. Users of older versions of theseprograms will be blown away. As of this writing, the OS is Leopard,although an upgraded version of the OS, Snow Leopard, will be releasedin September. My decision was mostlyinfluenced by the reduced prices and increased battery life.After some debating over buying the older model for same price orgetting the latest one we settled on the newest mid end $1999 modelwith 2 GPUs. As is common I got a very nice resale price for my olderMacBook Pro as it had AppleCare.This generation is an all around improvement over the pastgeneration unless you happen to be using ExpressCard on 15" model thatis. In our case we never used the ExpressCard after attempting to use aeSATA card that did not work really well. And we have a few SD Cardsthat we figure we can easily use.So on to the specific improvements over its predecessor -1) Battery Life - I was very doubtful that the battery would lastany longer than 4 hours at the maximum but was pleasantly surprised tofind that for surfing/email type and the occasional CNN/Youtube flashvideos getting 6+ hours was quite easy.2) Prices - No doubt prices are the most reasonable Apple laptopshave ever had. If you have no need for the dual GPU you can get the$1699 model which comes with a respectable 2.53Ghz Processor, 4GB RAMand a very capable 9400M GPU. 3) Operating Temperature - I have owned my share of laptops (Appleand non-Apple) and I have to say this one is the coolest - it nevergets too warm and I can use it on my lap all the times - even encodingvideos using the HandBrake application did not make it uncomfortablyhot. However if I switch it to use the 9600M GPU it gets warmer even onregular use. It also runs very quiet - the fans may be coming on but Inever notice.Initially there was a lot of furor over Apple's downgrade of theSerial-ATA interface speed (used to transfer data to and from the harddisk) to 1.5Gbps but Apple quickly restored the speeds to 3Gbps - I donot however notice any difference with the 5400RPM hard disk. About the display - it is gorgeous and colors are vibrant. I hadthe opportunity to use a calibrated color profile to make it look evenbetter. However I find the display to be a little too much reflectivebut I am coming from almost always using matte display so I figure it'sa matter of getting used to it.Apple's use of Mini DisplayPort is ahead of its time - not manydisplays support it and so I had to buy a $30 DVI adapter - not a bigproblem but Apple should at the very least re-start bundling theadapter with the Pro machines. Also, another USB port in lieu of the SDCard Reader would be quite welcome - people can use the SD Card Readerfor only SD Cards, but a USB port can be used for SD Cards as well asother peripherals.That said, this generation is overall a very nice improvement - thegreat battery life itself is enough to convince one to upgrade.

Great laptopI don't know about the other reviewer's experience, but I can saythat I love everything about this computer. The screen is bright andthe colors are vivid. I have listened to other laptop speakers, andthese sound very good. The keyboard is wonderful to type on. I had touninstall some bloatware, but that was expected. Will upgrade to a 12cell battery as soon as I can afford to. I highly recommend this laptopto anyone who wants a well made machine. Read the specs listed aboveand you will find that this machine has everything you would want in alaptop or desktop replacement. Con: somewhat large and slightly heavy,but then again your going to carry it in a bag anyways!Very good price/performer from HPThe G70-250US laptop is a very capable laptop but with a 17" screenit is not a lightweight. After 3 days of use these are my initialcomments. The "HP Imprint" silver finish on the keyboard is very smoothwhich has a glassy feel which I didn't' like initially, but it may growon me. The 4 directional keys, which are grouped below the right shiftkey, are half height keys which seem a little too small. The volumecontrol is a two key operation which uses the left function key and avolume key, and that is a slight annoyance as compared to my other HPlaptop (NC6220) which takes only 1 key press. The speakers and the LCDdisplay perform very well when viewing HD movie trailers and variousDVD's. There is nearly 25GB of preloaded software, and I removed about50% of which I don't care to use or have acquired previously. MicrosoftVista is a decent OS, however I found a case where it was notcompatible with my Netgear WGT624V3 wireless router (search the web fordetails on making a registry change in Vista). I'll describe my laptopuse to be 70% business, 30% casual audio/Photoshop editing and webshopping mostly at home. I'm pretty satisfied with this laptop knowingit's not a stellar performer but capable one for doing ordinary officework and recreational stuff which doesn't require the Intel "Genius"processor. It's a pretty good price performer from HP (and my 3rd HPlaptop). absolutely gorgeous!after careful consideration & tons of research, I bought thislaptop direct from the hp website mostly because of the hard drivespace & the huge screen. I was a bit worried that i had gotten myhopes up too high but this product absolutely did not disappoint! Thisis the fourth laptop computer i've owned, the others being two ibms(one bought through my university, it imploded two months after thewarranty ran out) & an iBook that i absolutely hated. this computeris by far my favourite. It runs fast, quiet & smooth & thescreen has such a brilliant picture! For school i use a lot of(allegedly) very high end computers for Computer Aided Design &Illustration classes, & honestly the picture on this notebook is athousand times clearer than those more expensive machines. Vista hastaken some time to get used to, but eventually i will adjust, just likei did when XP came out. This computer is an absolute steal. It'sdefinitely the best $700 i've ever spent.

Macbook graduates to PRO status!Well I must say I am very happy i did not buy apple's firstiteration of the 13" aluminum macbook last year b/c they really got itright the second time around upgrading it to a macbook pro! Great hardwareThis is my first Mac computer. My first four computers ran Win 3.1,Windows 95, XP, and Vista (from about 1995-present). I have quite a lotof time spent on each of them. Switching from Windows to Mac is notdifficult, but it can be a bit frustrating for a week or so. There areWindows features that you will miss, but they are mostly overcome byoverall advantages in my opinion.I've spent two weeks with this machine now. If I had written thisreview after one day, I would have probably stated that I regretted theswitch to Mac. After getting more proficient with the machine andrealizing how well it works, I would definitely recommend it to afriend. This review is going to be a mix of my impressions of both thehardware and the Mac operating system from a new Mac user perspective.The only difference between my machine and the one on this productpage is that I ordered directly from Apple and upgraded the hard driveto 250GB (from the 160GB base option). I am using 2gb of ram and thelower-end processor.My Mac OS impressions:The biggest thing I missed from Windows at first was the task bar.Mac uses the "dock" to replace the task bar. The dock is kind of likethe quick launch toolbar in Windows spread out across the entire bar,with large icons. Having used windows with a task bar for the past 13years, I missed the ability to see all open programs and switch betweenthem with the task bar. The dock has a tiny dot below the icon onrunning-programs, but nothing else to separate it from other programand folder icons. The dock is not nearly as useful for multitasking asthe task bar. The saving grace that rescues the Mac from awkward app-switchingwhile multitasking is called expose. Expose is activated by eitherpressing a key or using a multitouch gesture (four-finger swipe).Expose uses the entire screen to display all open windows and allow youto switch between them. It's like alt+tab on steroids. Having used themachine for a couple weeks, I miss using expose when I use my Windowsmachine. As much as I hated the dock at first, I have to give theadvantage to the Mac for managing multiple windows while multitasking. The controls for open-windows are quite different than inMS-Windows. In Mac, there is a resize, hide, and minimize buttoninstead of maximize, minimize, restore, and close. To close an app onthe mac you need to use a menu command or keyboard shortcut. The Macresize button kind of works like restore/maximize, only it's a bit moreawkward. A commenter here pointed out that it resizes the window forideal viewing without using the entire screen. I find myself resizingwindows by dragging corners more than I ever did on a Windows machine.I really miss the ability to maximize, if for no other reason but toavoid distractions. The green resize button may be better on anenormous monitor, but not on a 13" notebook. When you minimize or hidean app on the Mac, it is only available from the dock and is hiddenfrom expose. I'll give the window size-management advantage to Windowsin this contest. The windows system is just easier and more logical inmy opinion. It isn't a deal-breaker, but I do miss the Windows "windowcontrols." If you are a frequent user of the F11 key while web browsingin Windows you'll have to kiss that feature goodbye. Neither Firefoxnor Safari will go full-screen.Windows Explorer is "replaced" with an app called Finder. Finder iskind of like the start menu and an explorer window all rolled up intoone. Compared with older versions of Windows, finder is adequate butVista's explorer is quite a bit easier and more logical to use. Iprefer Vista's preview pane to Mac's coverflow. I miss the "up folder"button. I have found myself mostly using the view that puts files,folders and apps into a column view for easiest computer browsing, andit just isn't as elegant as Windows Vista. The lack of a maximizebutton has caused frustration especially in the finder, because thefinder likes to stay in a very small window unless you drag thecorners.The Safari web browser is nice and quick and has a decent securityreputation. I have been switching back and forth between Safari andFirefox. Firefox has crashed a couple of times and I really like beingable to use multitouch gestures with Safari, so I'm leaning towardmaking Safari my main web tool. Reading RSS feeds, and the bookmarktoolbar are really well done in Safari. Browsers are so personal thatit's difficult to recommend one over the other, but as a Firefox userin Windows I think I have high standard and Safari has met or exceededthem.I absolutely hate the iPhoto app. Iphoto does not allow you toorganize and browse your photos in folders. It imports your picturesand sorts them itself based on time/date stamps on the photos. Thisworks fine for personal vacation snapshots but it completely mixed upthe rest of my images. Folders that were neatly organized for workprojects, and fun web clippings, and adult stuff were all shuffled intoone big mess after I imported my image collection. I ended up justdeleting all of them and not using iphoto at all. Right now I'm justusing Finder to browse my photos and the preview app to view them.Light editing work isn't possible in the preview app and I stillhaven't decided what to use for a basic photo editor yet. Vista's photoapp is junk but it's still superior to iPhoto if you like to keep yourphotos organized using your own folder system. I know people who loveiphoto. It comes down to whether you want the ability to organize yourcollection yourself. If you have a big mess of photos, you'll loveiphoto's ability to organize them via event and face recognition. Edited to add: you can organize your photos into "albums" afteryou import them into iPhoto, but be prepared to spend a lot of timereorganizing everything. Even after you organize into albums, the mainlibrary screen gives you views of your entire collection (perhapsthings you don't want everyone to see).I have not used Garage Band or iMovie yet. I'll update later when I get a chance. Edited to add: I played with garage band a bit and it's prettypowerful. It allows you to import and export AAC and MP3 tracks andrecord sound in multiple tracks. Very easy to use. The only other audioapp i've ever used is audacity and I much prefer Garage Band. I haven'tused any of the music lessons it offers yet but plan to soon.I played with iMovie for a few minutes and it seems pretty niceand very intuitive. I actually don't mind Windows Movie Maker, which isincluded with Vista. I would not consider it a big step up from WinMovie Maker, but it's a nice app.The mail, calendar, and address book apps are basic but work veryvery well. The address app will import common file types easily. Itwill sync with yahoo out of the box. Address book will only sync withGoogle contacts if you own an iPhone or iPod Touch.Everyone has an opinion about iTunes. I'm a big fan of it. It'sexactly like the windows version only it runs a bit faster without thebugs. If you have an iPhone or iPod touch, the Windows-iTunes bug withtime/date being wrong after the computer sleeps is not an issue on theMac.Time machine is the Mac's backup app. It is amazing and verysimple. I'm using an external drive plugged into my Apple Airportwireless router, as a backup disk. My wireless disk showed up on mydesktop instantly once I plugged it into the router. Time machinenoticed the external drive right away and went to work backing up myfiles (after asking permission of course). Now my machine automaticallybacks up any changes every hour as long as I'm in range of my wirelessaccess point. Time machine is a big load off my mind. If I ever have adrive failure or my computer is destroyed I have an exact backup ofeverything without remembering to backup my files. Vista will backupaccording to a set schedule, but it lacks the ability to easily lookthrough backups for specific files. Time machine is wonderful and makewireless backup effortless.The Mac disk utility is almost as good as the one in Vista and it'seasier to use. It's far superior to the one in XP. I used it to formatmy external wireless drive because the Mac router couldn't read NTFSformating (although the computer can read NTFS drives via USB for somereason). The graphics control software is a joy to use. When I plug in myexternal monitor it immediately extends my desktop to the new monitor.Adjusting everything from resolution to rotation couldn't be anyeasier. Boot camp is a utility that allows you to create a partition andinstall Windows as a secondary boot system (you need to own or buy alegal single-disk 32bit copy of either Windows XP or Windows Vista).When you start up the boot camp utility, it gives you a choice betweenusing either 5 or 32 GB of space for the Windows partition. I learnedthe hard way that Windows XP SP3 won't fit into 5GB. You need to giveit at least the 32 GB (which left me with almost exactly 200GB on my"250" GB drive). Installing Windows using the Boot Camp utility is veryvery easy. Once you get Windows loaded, your OSX install disk makesquick work of installing drivers for all of your laptop's hardware.It's too bad that Nvidia and HP aren't as good at putting together easyWindows driver packages as Apple. In order to boot into Windows, yousimply press the "option" key during bootup and it allows you to choosewhich OS to run. Windows XP absolutely screams on this hardware.The hardware:The hardware is where this computer really shines. The biggest advantage is stability. My last computer purchase was avista machine. To say that I had stability and hardware compatibilityissues with my HP Vista desktop is an understatement. The main reason Iturned to mac for this purchase was the fact that the hardware,drivers, and software are made for each other. This machine has ranflawlessly for the past two weeks. I did have two crashes of theFirefox browser while watching Flash video, but only the browser wentdown rather than the entire system.I have connected an external monitor, camera, ipod, USB drive, androuter to this machine. All of the drivers were already installed andeverything has "just worked." The hardware is a joy to use when it justworks. It is difficult to put into words how happy I am with the lackof effort in using this machine.The speed isn't blazing-fast but it runs very well, even with manymany apps and windows running. My Vista desktop has similar specs, butmy new Mac feels slightly faster.One outstanding productivity feature of this machine is the touchpad. I honestly prefer it to using a mouse for office and browsingtasks. I can't say enough good things about the multitouch gestures.Two finger scrolling, two finger right-click, three finger forward andback in Safari, and four finger expose make this machine feel like likeit is part of you. Having the entire surface of the touchpad as thebutton is brilliant, especially for drag and drop operations. The largesize of the touchpad makes it very precise. The keyboard is really nice. At first I thought the keys were a bitsoft and the travel was too shallow, but I quickly got used to it andnow prefer it to my more "clicky" desktop keyboard. I don't know how Ilived this long without a backlit keyboard. The backlight is moreuseful than I thought it would be.The display is beautiful. It has good color, a wide viewing angle,and is plenty bright for indoor environments. I would prefer that thescreen wasn't glass, but the reflections aren't as bad as I feared. Ifthere is a bright light source behind you, you'll need to angle thescreen to reduce the glare but it's workable.The DVD drive is a DVD drive. It feels slow and makes a lot ofnoise. I've never owned an optical drive that I considered fast andquiet, and this one isn't any exception. It works well, but isn'tanything special.The battery life is incredible. The seven hour battery life is notan exaggeration if you are using the computer for light browsing andoffice apps. Expect about 4-5 hours if you're using it for heavy webbrowsing and a bit of media. Listening to music with the display offwould easily last over the advertised 7 hours. Streaming highdefinition video on netflix using wireless will knock it down to at orbelow three hours. I haven't watched DVD movies on battery power but Iexpect it to barely get you through a single two hour film with a bitleft over.The size and weight are ideal for portability. 4.5lbs doesn'texactly feel light until you compare it to similarly spec'd machinesthat weigh a full pound (20%) more. I wouldn't want a larger machine ifI had to lug it around much. The speakers are quite good for a small light machine. Don't expectmuch bass, but the sound is very clear with good mids and highs. Thespeakers are plenty loud for listening to podcasts or music in asemi-quiet medium sized room or office. I won't need to pack externalspeakers for use in my hotel room when I travel, like my last laptop.The "magsafe" power adapter is more than just a gimmick, and morethan just a way to avoid tripping and breaking your machine. The "powerbrick" itself is a lot smaller than my last dell laptop. It's exactlythe same size as the USB wall adapters that used to be included withipods. The cord is 6ft long and the brick includes fold-out wings towrap the cord around. It is very well thought-out for travel. With thecord wrapped up and the plug folded into the body, the power brick onlytakes up about 2.5" x 3" x 1" in your bag. When you are using it athome or at the office there is an included 6ft extension cord for thepower brick so you aren't as tethered to your desk. The computer runs very cool compared to most laptops. Also, thereare no vents where super-heated air blows out. While I'm sure it uses afan, I've never audibly actually heard it run or felt a stream of warmair from it. I think it may vent through ports and the keyboard but itruns cool enough that you don't notice it. Edited to add: it does getrather warm when watching high resolution video, but stays quite coolwhen web browsing or using normal office apps. Even when very warm, thefan is still quiet (the only way to actually hear the fan is to hold itnear your ear). The only drawback to the hardware compared to Windows machines isthe fact that there is no option to hibernate when closing the lid. Itsleeps when you close the lid but it still is using a small amount ofpower. If you're only going to be away for a couple hours this isn't anissue, but you must completely shut down when on battery power ifyou're going to be away much longer. This machine is a lot more expensive than similarly spec'd Windowsmachines but I feel that it's worth the money. I'm a very satisfied Macswitcher.Not sure why all of the haters keep griping about Compact Flash...I just got my brand new 13.3" Macbook Pro in the mail. I customizedmine with 4GB of RAM and a 250 GB hard drive, but with the entry-level2.26 GHz Intel processor. I unboxed it in front of my mother andsister, and they were both oohing and aahing about how beautiful andthin it was. They also loved the magnetic connector on the end of thepower adapter that snaps the power cord into the computer nearly byitself. I powered the computer up, went through the Leopard setupscreens, and within minutes was logged in. While starting up, the lightsensor powered on, the screen dimmed, and the keyboard lit-upautomatically. Everything about this computer suggests ingenious designand engineering, with great attention to every detail. It is verylight, and since I am using this for school, I am very happy with thesize and form factor, particularly the charger. Switching from a largeDell that sported a charger that could be used to bludgeon somebody todeath, the small white charger that is about the size of a wallet is abreath of fresh air. This laptop will be a pleasure to travel with.Are there things this computer lacks? Yes, there is no Blu-Rayplayer, which would have been nice, but for me was not a deal-breaker.I suspect that the next-gen MBP's will phase out the rotary hard drivesand switch to solid state as the standard, and will all have Blu-Rayplayers. Until that time, this little laptop is more than sufficient.If I had to come up with a gripe about this computer, there isreally only one- and this is true for most of Apple's products- theiPod, iPhone, and MBP's- I wish that they would not coat portableproducts with textures that are so easy to scratch. It is apparent thatafter a few months of toting this to class, it is going to have somescuffs on it. It seems like a bit of a paradox that a company that putsso much value on aesthetics seems only to care about how the productlooks when it is taken out of the original packaging. That said, thislaptop feels extremely sturdy, and apart from normal wear and tearmarks, I am not fearful that it will fall apart, which is a whole lotmore than I can say for my previous piece of crap plastic Dell.In reading other reviews, people seem to be unable to understandthat this qualifies as an ultra-portable laptop. It is simply not goingto have a peripheral hookup for every type of flash card and five USBhookups. Are people serious with lambasting Apple for merging the audiojack in/out ports into one single port? Really, who gives a rat's a$$?This is a PORTABLE computer, not a media center. If you are a user whofavors those things, then you are free to go out and purchase thenecessary adapters, but I would rather have a lightweight computer thatI can easily tote around. If you want a laptop that is prepared for anyoccasion, go buy an 8 lb. Dell desktop replacement, and have fun. I forone think people just want a reason to moan or find something tocomplain about. The fact is that for the money, you are not going tofind a better laptop than this one. It costs a bit more than competingPC products, but I have owned Dell's and HP's, and I can tell you, youget what you pay for. If you use your laptop for at least a couple ofhours a day, I think it is worth a couple hundred extra to get a reallyhigh quality product that makes you happy, and that is why I upgradedto the MBP.

This computer is the bomb!I got this laptop as a birthday present formyself. Before getting this, I browsed different computers andconsidered Dell XPS 16, Mac Pro 15 inch and Lenovo Y650 as well. Afterall the comparisons that I made according to the design & featuresof all the laptops, Vaio FW won over a lot of mile.Price: The price is very reasonable having jam-packed features. Ifyou customized all the features that Vaio FW has to the otheraformentioned units, i bet it will cost a lot lot more. See belowprices comparison according to specs that Vaio FW465 offers withcertain differences:a.) Sony FW - From the main Sony site it is Less than 1,200(including the mail-in-rebate) plus free 100 music downloads while fromamazon.com it will be 1,029 (including rebate) b.) Mac Pro 15 - Around 2k! The difference in specs with the VaioFW are the following: backlit keyboard and battery life are the prosfor Apple as I can see it. Apple have Mac OS but Sony offers freeWindows 7 upgrade, sooo I still stick to that. The graphic card of Macis Nvidia 9400m while Vaio have the astonishing HD4650. This is still ok, knowing that Lenovo's are reallydurable.Main Features: I like how they customized it to have 2.53ghz ofprocessor speed with 320gb of memory having 7200rpm. That featureitself is already a plus compared to any other laptops out there. Theblu-ray capability makes your HD experience of watching movies reallygreat combined with High Definition Audio with Dolby Digital Live andthe brightness of the screen. Nobody else (as of now) does greatBlu-ray experience the same way Sony does it, for me. The graphic cardwas also upgraded to Ati Radeon HD4650 with 1gb dedicate dvideo RAMmaking your gaming experience really great. I also like the classy lookof Vaio FW with the hinge and just seeing the Vaio logo makes peopleWOW already. Also, almost all my gadgets (PSP, my cellphone, camera andmusic player) are sony, so I find this convenient having the magic gatecard slot. The motion eye camera, the pebble black key panels and themultimedia dedicated buttons are awesome as well. One more thing, ifyou guys are concerned about the heat being produced by this laptop -don't worry because it has a great cooling system and dock design. Theheat is common to all laptops but this one is a lot cooler than others(compared to my old gateway, dell, macbook and my dad's toshiba). I just wish it has a backlit keyboard to make it a complete packagealready (though the screen is too bright that you can see the keyboardpanel as well, during night). Also, the bloatwares should be lessen --I don't find this an issue but I know it's a hassle for some. You candelete them anyway but you have to allot some of your time in doing so.One more thing, you have to do a lot of things to maximize theperformance of the laptop during the setup.I don't need to make this really long. Overall, the unit is verynice and it has totally awesome features with it. This is a great buyand you can never go wrong with Vaio FW. I bet you can make use of thislaptop for many years without being out-dated. I am a meticulous personwhen choosing my gadgets --- and this unit meets my expectation!I ordered the Vaio FW neoprene together with this unit and it fits quite well.Great laptop I just got this laptop on Saturday. Oh by the way yes the AW seriesis designed for "Photographers" but this is a perfectly capablecomputer, the 18" screen on the AW series is a bit to big to lug aroundin any photographers gear bag, this computer is superior performancewise then athe VGN-AW310J (which is priced higher) it just has a 2 inchsmaller screen, which to some may find important. I am happy withbetter performance than a bigger screen since I have a 22" samsunganyway.Ideal for graphics editing Gorgeous wide screen notebook that is idealfor graphics editing. It lacks useful features found in less expensivenotebooks of comparable size (e.g. 16" HP notebooks), such asfingerprint security and hard drive auto-lock, but the faster harddrive (7200 rpm vs 5400 rpm), faster CPU and front-side bus, andadditional RAM, make this Sony much more ideal for Photoshop andLightroom use. The keyboard and touchpad are excellent. On the minusside, it is a little pricey, it gets warmer than I would like, and itsbattery loses power much more quickly than I would like. All thingsconsidered, however, it is a high quality notebook and is great-lookingin chocolate brown.

I switched to Mac and all I got was this stupid smileI upgraded to a new Vista laptop last year, and have been unhappyand frustrated with it from the start. When my daughter's laptop died ahorrible death, I really didn't want to go through the same Vista painswith her, so I decided to replace it with a Mac (it's going to be aChristmas present, so shhh!). As designated tech support for my familyand friends, I started learning everything I could about Mac before shestarted asking questions. The more I learned about it, the more Iwanted one for myself, and now that I have one, I am really kickingmyself for not switching last year.It's simply beautiful. I know it sounds like I drank theapple-flavored Kool-Aid, but the Macbook really is a marvel of elegantform and function. It feels solid and substantial, without being bulkyand heavy. the aluminum design is a work of art, and I reallyappreciate all of the eco-friendly choices that were made regarding thecomponents.The LED screen is brighter and clearer than my old laptop's LCDscreen. Looking at them side by side, the difference is amazing (and myold laptop was marketed as a portable entertainment PC, with anupgraded screen). I don't know what kind of LCD screens some of theother users have, but the Macbook screen is far superior to anynotebook screen I've ever seen.The back-lit keyboard is great - no more keyboard light needed. Thekeys have a solid feel to them, they're not mushy or noisy like somekeyboards can be, they're just right, and the key layout is just like afull-size keyboard - no more hunting to figure out where the heck thebackslash key is hidden or hitting the wrong key because your pinkyslipped off of an undersized shift key. I'll admit that I couldn't figure out the trackpad at first, but Ifelt like a dork once I realized how simple it is. I did change thesettings so that I can tap to click in addition to pressing down on thetrackpad (since that's what I'm used to). It's just incredibly easyonce you get going. Swipe two fingers down the pad to scroll, swipefour for expose, tap with two fingers for secondary-click... it doesmore straight out of the box than my old highly-programed touch-pad.And after about an hour, the gestures become second-nature. As far as the built-in speakers go, they're nicer than I expected,especially since I can't figure out how the heck they fit any speakersinto such a tiny case. Seriously, it's like the whole case is thespeaker. As I type this review, I'm listening to the album ParadiseLost by Symphony X and It sounds pretty good to me. of course, itsounds even better played through my Klipsch Room Groove, but um..hey... they're integrated laptop speakers - though they are very niceones.There are only two USB ports, but since the keyboard and trackpadare so functional, you won't need external input devices (though anumber pad is a must for me when doing a lot of data-entry). I only useUSB for external storage and synching my iPod, so it's not a problemfor me (my iPod touch has a program that lets it act like a number padwhen I need one). If I ever need more devices at once, I'll get a USBhub.Now, it's confession time: As a Windows-centric IT Professional, Inever liked Apple much, and I spent many years making fun of Mac andMac users. When OS X came out, I couldn't justify further ridicule, soI just ignored Mac whenever the subject came up. After using Leopardfor a short time, I can tell you that I don't have the appetite to eatthe big heaping serving of humble pie that I'm owed. Leopard is slickand smooth and oh so fast. I'm truly enamored with iLife and iWork, andTime Machine is just about perfect (better than shadow copies, for theWindows guys and gals). It's packed with a lot of little things (likeSpotlight and Preview) that are unobtrusive and helpful, which is avast improvement over Vista's annoying and unhelpful features.So, now I'm a happy convert. I still have two programs that areWindows-only (until I find replacements), and I still go back to my old(1 year old) laptop occasionally (for just the two, I don't want tobother with Boot Camp or Parallels). I hate going back to Vista afterusing my Macbook. Even though that laptop technically has higher RAMand processor specs than the Macbook, it's slow and clunky incomparison. I always sigh in relief when I can put it away again.Bottom line: I love my Macbook and I wish I hadn't waited so longto make the switch. If you're worried about switching to Mac, visit anApple Store - even if you have to make a day trip to get there, it willbe worth it. Spend a little hands on time with the Macbook, and checkout all the free classes the store offers. If you buy from the store,they will move your files from your old PC for you (for free). It's incredible. With faults. That's all I'm going to say for my introduction. Read on.Physical SpecsThe product physically is very sturdy, thanks to the unibodyconstruction. Normally the chassis would normally consist of varioussmall parts. So instead of taking a small piece of aluminum and addingmore aluminum, Apple has taking a big piece of aluminum and subtractedfrom it. Thus creating a sturdy, yet light laptop. I have heard thatthe aluminum interferes with internet connectivity issues. I do have tosay, unfortunately, it is true. I put the Macbook and my old PC laptopside by side, and the PC was able to pick up better frequency and morenetworks. Now for the multi-touch trackpad. It is made from glass, but itfeels like there is a covering on it that doesn't nearly have thefriction of glass. Clicking and moving the cursor is very easy andenjoyable, with the very large surface. Right-clicking can be done withby clicking with two fingers or by clicking one of the bottom cornersafter being manually set. It should also be noted that only the bottom3/4 of the trackpad is clickable. The multi-touch gestures are fun to use, but are truly unneeded gimmicks that could be done easier with a click.I'll just go through the gestures now. There are 2 finger gestures:The first is scrolling with using two fingers by swiping your fingers vertically or horizontally depending on the page. Secondly you can rotate a picture using two fingers apart and rotating.The third gesture is holding the control button and scrolling vertically to zoom in on a page.And there is one 3-finger gesture:Swipe with three fingers to navigate. You can do this to go forward or back on a page, or changing a picture.Lastly there are 4-finger gestures:Swiping vertically upwards allows you to clear everything off your desktop.Swiping vertically down launches Expose. Swiping horizontally in any direction lets you change and view yourrunning applications, which can also be done with command+tab. On the bottom of the MacBook there is a panel that allows for easyaccess to your battery and hard drive. This will be handy to manypeople.The keyboard is just like the Air, with the spaces between thekeys. This creates a very nice typing experience, and are backlit ifyou purchase the 2.4GHz model. A major letdown by Apple is the omission of a FireWire port. Thisis very disappointing to many people, but doesn't affect me at all.Nowadays the average users don't use FireWire too much. Although I dosee this as a major problem for professional applications. There is also a battery life indicator on the side of the base that glows green to show the rounded percentage of your battery.Software and PerformanceOf course the MacBook has the great Mac OS X Leopard software. It is very fast, and has good security. The battery life is advertised to have 5 hours of battery life, butApple obviously means not being connected to the Internet, and havingno applications running. You'll probably get about 4 and a half hourswith Safari and other apps running. Unless you have a lot of apps onlike me, then you'll maybe have 3 and a half to 4 hours. With the NVidia graphics card, the screen looks pretty good, as dogames. I do have to admit, though, the new MacBook Pro screen looksbetter, especially with blacks. Still, games really pop on the gorgeousglossy screen, unless you are in a bright area. The glossy screen ofcourse attracts bad glares and many noticeable fingerprints. Still, ifyou are indoors or someplace with low light, the glossy screen isperfect. I mostly use it inside, so I wouldn't trade the beautifulglossy screen. Although for those coffee-shop typing folks, this couldbe a deal-breaker.Other than these things, Mac OS X is the same, really. ConclusionIf you have purchased a MacBook anytime soon, then I would notsuggest you purchase this one. Most of the differences are the physicalattributes, and the software is pretty much the same.If you are new to Macs like me, then I would DEFINITELY suggestthis phenomenal notebook computer. Of course it does have it's faults,truly I have never used such a simple, enjoyable computer.Not quite what we were hoping for...I work as an IT manager, overseeing about 4000+ client computers.About one-fourth of them are Macs. I myself am a long-time Mac user,currently using a dual-quad Mac Pro and a 1st gen white MacBook, whichI love both of them.Full disclosure: I do not own this new MacBook (although I hadplanned to upgrade), but we bought several for evaluation purposes todetermine whether they would be purchased in larger quantities. I haveused one for almost a week now and have developed a love / haterelationship with them.The Good:The unibody is a beautiful design, and makes for a rigid and solidfeeling notebook. I like the fact they've make it easier to performhard drive and memory upgrades. The battery indicator on the side is anice touch, instead of on the bottom, but I admit, I never used it thatmuch, since I tend to check the battery life when it's on and I checkit on the menu bar.Once you get used to it, the new trackpad, it's a delight to use,and the new finger gestures are useful. The new DisplayPort also seemsto work well enough, although once again, new adapters will have topurchased. Some people have complained about the lack of HDMI, but ifyou read the specs for the DisplayPort standard, it really takes usinto the next generation of video display and is a better standard,IMHO.Finally, the new graphics update is much welcomed. Graphicsperformance has substantially been increased, and the 2.0 GHz machineswe're testing are pretty snappy when using graphics intensive tasks. Wedon't play games with these, but I'm sure gamers will welcome thechange. Our Pro Apps are noticeably faster.The Bad:Naturally, this new manufacturing process has to cost Apple more,but we didn't except to pay so much more for a computer with worst[basic] specs than what we were getting in our purchase of the whiteand black MacBooks. Except for graphics performance, our CPU benchmarksare very lackluster in comparison. Our IT budget is very tight rightnow, and it's going to be hard to justify a purchase with so littledifference in performance. Respectively, each model, compared to theMacBook model it replaced, is only 6% and 12% faster. These benchmarkshave been independently verified by many Mac-related websites.Several of our early testers are complaining about the ultra-glossy(or glassy) screen and the quality of the display itself. Our officesare brightly-lit and it takes quite a bit of adjustment to properly seethe screen without severe glare. This isn't as noticeable in low-lightenvironments, but we also see poor side-to-side viewing, meaning youalmost have to look at these dead-on straight to see a good image.Comparing it to earlier MacBooks and MBP's, these new models are muchworse. Fingerprints are much more noticeable also, and the glass frontbezel seems to be a fingerprint magnet. That's not a big deal, but theycomplained that calibration doesn't help the color flaws in this newdisplay. These use LED displays, as opposed to TFT displays that theprevious MacBook had.
